An Integrated Approach to Medical Countermeasure Development Successful development of medical countermeasures for biological, chemical and radiological threats is a complex process with much associated risk. Mitigation of this risk requires flexibility at all stages of development, and this flexibility is best addressed in a virtual, systems integration approach.
An assessment of health status among medical research volunteers who served in the Project Whitecoat program at Fort Detrick, Maryland Between 1954 and 1973, more than 2000 men entering military service as conscientious objectors participated in Project Whitecoat as medical research volunteers for the Army's biological warfare defense program. An assessment of self-reported, current health status among 358 "exposed" individuals and 164 unexposed control subjects found no conclusive evidence that receipt of investigational agents was related to adverse health outcomes.

Development of a recombinant vaccine against aerosolized plague Although few diseases have had a greater impact on human history, currently there is no vaccine available for protection against plague that is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). DVC is managing the advanced development of a recombinant plague vaccine candidate (rF1V) for the U.S. Department of Defense to provide protection against plague aerosols, the most likely form a biological weapon would take.

Formulation of botulinum neurotoxin heavy chain fragments for vaccine development: mechanisms of adsorption to an aluminum-containing adjuvant Heavy chain fragments of botulinum neurotoxin serotypes A and B are being developed as a bivalent vaccine for botulism. To potentiate the immune response, an aluminum containing adjuvant will be formulated with the two antigens.
Fundamentals of Host Defense and Innate Immunity Host defense is a common feature of all metazoan animals, which dictates the need for an evolutionarily conserved system of humoral and cellular elements dedicated to this goal. Innate or "natural" immunity has historically been seen as inferior to adaptive immunity; however, this is patently incorrect, as new data are clearly demonstrating.
